Characteristics:

These are such retiring burrowers that even where common the little snakes are seldom seen. They are adult at 5 to 7 inches in length. A tiny grayish to tan snake with a black cap, a variable light nape, and a dark collar with a straight rear margin. Upper labial (lip) scales are black. 15 rows of smooth scales, divided anal plate. Scales are smooth. All species in this genus are considered rear-fanged snakes that produce enough of a weak venom to help them overpower their insect and arthropod prey. All are oviparous.

Habitat and Diet:

Easily burrowed, sandy soils. Primarily feeds on insects and arthropods
